Etiquette on clothing-optional beaches, as the authorities state it

Most of the etiquette people ask about is already written down by the bodies that run the beaches. This page collects those rules, quoted, so a reader can see who says what. Nothing here is a house opinion.

The definition the federations use

The International Naturist Federation defines naturism, in a definition adopted in 1974, as "a way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment". Every rule below is a local version of the second clause.

Stay inside the marked area, and dress before you leave it

St. Lucie County, Florida: "Stay within posted nude-optional boundaries" and "Cover up before leaving beach boundaries or entering parking areas." The National Trust at Studland: "We ask naturists to be clothed if they're outside the designated area." Oregon's ODFW asks Collins Beach users to "stay within the posted boundaries of Collins Beach (1400 feet south of private property signs)", adding that they "do not want to lose the privilege to use this beach". Munich's ordinance is the strictest version: outside its six named zones, swimwear covering the primary genitals is required in public.

Photography needs consent

Travis County, Texas: "Please respect the privacy of other visitors and ask permission before taking photographs." St. Lucie County: never photograph others without permission, and never photograph minors except your own children. This guide follows the same rule and carries no photographs of people.

Behaviour

Travis County: "Nudity is acceptable, lewd behavior is not." St. Lucie County: no lewd behaviour, and public sexual activity is illegal. The National Trust: "Any sexual activity is unwelcome and criminal in a public place", and it works with British Naturism and the police to keep Studland "safe and family-friendly". Miami-Dade describes its Haulover section as "family oriented" and staffs it with volunteer beach ambassadors in green safari hats who explain the do's and don'ts.

Space and staring

St. Lucie County's list is the most explicit: "Respect personal space and privacy", and do not stare or set up directly beside other groups when the beach is uncrowded. The same page asks visitors to keep to stable ground near the parking lot for picnics, which is as much about dunes as about people.

Age rules exist in one place

Hippie Hollow Park in Texas is the only entry in this guide with an age restriction: "Entry to the park is restricted to those people 18 years and older." Every other authority quoted describes its area as open to families; Haulover calls its section "family-friendly". Check the region page for the beach you mean.

Pets, alcohol, glass, fires

These are park rules rather than naturist rules, but they are the ones people get wrong. Blind Creek: no pets, alcohol, glass or fires. Hippie Hollow: pets prohibited without exception. Wreck Beach (Metro Vancouver): liquor, camping and fires prohibited, no commercial dog walkers in the beach area year-round. Collins Beach: no open fires, dogs on leash. Sandy Hook: alcohol not allowed, glass containers prohibited on swimming beaches. Makena State Park: no pets, alcohol, open fires, camping, smoking or driving on the beach.
