A first visit to a clothing-optional beach: what to check before you go

The surprises on a first visit are rarely about clothing. They are about a locked gate, a permit you did not buy, a tide that closes the only path, or a beach where swimming is forbidden. Each item below comes from an official page in this guide.

1. Read the status line first

Every entry in this guide carries a legal-status line with its source. If it says "not designated", the page quotes the law and the visit is your decision, made with the statute in front of you. If it says "designated", the same page will usually tell you where the boundary is; that boundary is the first thing to find on arrival.

2. Check the hours and the gate

Parks close. Hippie Hollow is open 9 am to 8 pm, closes to new entries 30 minutes before closing, and shuts for the day when it reaches capacity on holiday weekends. Makena State Park's Little Beach has shorter weekend hours (5 am to 4 pm) than the main beach. Sauvie Island's beaches are open 4 am to 10 pm. Metro Vancouver locks its park gates at closing time, which at the earliest is 5 pm.

3. Buy the permit or the pass

Some beaches are free with a catch. Collins Beach needs a Sauvie Island Beaches Parking Permit (10 dollars a day in 2026) on summer weekends and holidays. Rooster Rock needs an Oregon State Parks day-use parking permit. On Sylt, the beach sections at Buhne 16 are reached only with a valid guest card, and day visitors buy a day pass from the card checkers. Makena charges non-residents for parking and entry. Sandy Hook charges a seasonal parking fee. Blind Creek is free.

4. Look at the tide and the river

Praia das Adegas is "unicamente acessível na maré baixa", only reachable along the sand at low tide; at high tide the one way in is the cliff footpath. Rooster Rock warns that foot access to its clothing-optional beach "may be limited" when the Columbia is high, and links a river-level page. Lourtuais in Brittany is largest at low water.

5. Decide whether you will swim at all

At Werrong Beach in Royal National Park, "swimming is not permitted here" because of rips and rocks, and the track in is grade 5, 4 km return. 6 entries in this guide say on their own page that there is no lifeguard or that you swim at your own risk: Blind Creek Beach, Hippie Hollow Park, Gunnison Beach (Beach G), Wreck Beach, Nugal beach, Werrong Beach. The NPS at Sandy Hook asks visitors to swim only where lifeguards are on duty, which at Sandy Hook means areas C, D and E, not Gunnison.

6. Plan the walk

Wreck Beach: "Beach access trails are steep (except for Acadia Beach)". Black's Beach: access is "very difficult due to the high cliffs and unimproved and unmaintained trails", and the cliffs are unstable. Werrong: "extremely steep and slippery". Studland's naturist section is about half an hour's walk from either car park. Morfa Dyffryn, by contrast, has a flat boardwalk suitable for wheelchairs, and Blind Creek was building an ADA restroom at its south entrance when read.

7. Bring what the page says to bring

NSW National Parks lists it for Werrong: drinking water, hat, sunscreen. Where a page lists no facilities (Marshall's Beach, Kandarola, Lourtuais, Île du Levant), assume none and carry everything out; Metro Vancouver asks visitors to carry litter to the trailhead bins. Blind Creek's list of what not to bring is the shortest summary of most parks' rules: no pets, alcohol, glass or fires.

8. Know the one age rule

Hippie Hollow admits only people 18 and older. No other authority in this guide sets an age limit; several describe their area as family-friendly.

9. Photograph nobody

Travis County and St. Lucie County both require permission before photographing anyone. The simplest practice is to leave the camera in the bag until you are back at the car park.
