Clothing-optional beaches in California: the one the park service names, and the famous one it does not
What the authorities say
California has no statewide designated beaches. Within Golden Gate National Recreation Area the National Park Service itself describes Marshall's Beach as clothing optional. Black's Beach in San Diego is jointly owned by the City and the State; the City's own page describes the beach, its cliffs and its lifeguards and says nothing about clothing, so it is listed here as not designated.

Marshall's Beach

Black's Beach (Torrey Pines City Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach)
Legal status: The City of San Diego page describes the beach and its lifeguard station and does not mention clothing; no city or state designation exists.
Where A 2-mile sandy strip at the base of 300-foot cliffs below the Torrey Pines gliderport, jointly owned by the City of San Diego and the State of California. Access The city calls access "very difficult due to the high cliffs and unimproved and unmaintained trails". Facilities One of nine San Diego beaches with a permanent lifeguard station. What is not on this page
Beaches that appear on commercial lists for California but have no official page stating a clothing rule. Adding one would mean inventing a status, and a wrong "legal" here is a harm, not a typo. If you know an official page for a beach that belongs here, the editorial policy says how to send it.
